THE Old Firm's greatest-ever captains will stand side-byside later this year when they are awarded honorary degrees.

Rangers legend John Greig and Hoops hero Billy McNeill will be made doctors of the University of Glasgow at a ceremony in June.

They were given the honours in recognition of their achievements both on and off the field.

McNeill captained the legendary Lisbon Lions, who lifted the European Cup after sinking Italian giants Inter Milan 2-1.

Greig, who was voted Greatest Ever Ranger in a fan poll, captained three treblewinning Rangers sides and the team which won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972.

McNeill, 68, said: "I have few regrets in life but one is that I never studied at university, so it means a lot to me to be awarded an honourary degree from the University of Glasgow."

Greig, 65, who has a bronze statue in his honour outside Ibrox stadium, said the award was a big surprise.

He added: "It's a great honour. I left school at 15 and university always seemed out of my reach but now I can see the importance of education.

"I'd like to thank Rangers for giving me a platform and this award is as much for the club as it is for me."

After retiring both had successful spells as manager of their clubs.

Among other honours, McNeill won four league titles during two spells as coach, including a famous double on the club's 100th birthday in 1988.

Greig managed to win two Scottish Cups and two league cups during his five-year reign in the late 70s and early 80s.

University of Glasgow's principal Sir Muir Russell said: "John Greig and Billy McNeill personify the often unsung contribution the Old Firm clubs make to improving community relations and in supporting many good and charitable causes."
